When I start LabWindows CVI 8.1 a dialog appears requesting to insert the NI LabVIEW Run-Time Engine 7.1.1 disk. I cannot find this disk included with my LabWindows/CVI installation kit. Why does LabWindows/CVI require a LabVIEW install disk?

I was having this same problem just two weeks ago, or so. I have CVI 8.0 and had installed Labview 8.2 but hadn't done much with it. Then, mysteriously, this error started popping up. I could not figure out what was happening. I uninstalled Labview. I eventually had to un-install CVI also and then re-install it. There were other gremlins running around related to NI products, but the total wiping and re-install seemed to clear them up.

If you could provide us with some information we may be able to track down why this is happening.

The next time the installer dialog pos up follow this procedure:

Right Click on "My Computer" and select Manage. Then go to the event viewer and look at the Application event logs. In here you should find some MSI Error logs that tell us what GUID and what file it could not find and was trying to repair.

phmoore,

Can you navigate to the folder mentioned in the error log? (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\National Instruments\DataSocket) If not, is there a similar folder under C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu... or C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Start Menu... ? If there is a similar folder there, try moving it to the All Users path and see if that resolves the issue.

What programs are you trying to run when you get this error? And what version of NI-DAQ did you recently install that may have caused the problem?

Eric,

I moved the "National Instruments" start menu folder back to be under "All Users\Start Menu\Programs" in both of my computers. This fixed the problems instantly.

The NI-DAQmx software I installed is version 8.7.1 (Windows XP). The programs I run are: Visual Studio 6 (happens when Visual Studio started), MCE Designer - a vendor supplied GUI (happens whenever a submenu is opened or display box pops up).

I had reorganized the start menu folder using subfolders in both computers that have this problem. I have way too many programs to keep everything on the top start menu level. Do I have to keep the National Instruments folder in this start menu place?

Thanks for your help.

-Paul

Paul,

The short answer to your question is "yes". There may be some way to change the reference to that DataSocket folder, but I am not aware of one. I will look into this to see if that is possible, but for now, those files have to stay in your Start menu.
