Syncronisation PCMCIA CAN and PCMCIA DAQCard

Dear All

I have an existing analogue data acq system which uses a DAQCard-6036E in a laptop (Windows). I am expanding the system to include an instrument which outs a CAN (low speed) signal.

Ideally I would like to use a PCMCIA CAN Card in the second slot of my laptop.

I am after advice on if it is possible to syncronise a PCMCIA CAN Card (low speed fault tolerate) and a DAQCard-6036E in the one laptop?

Alternativly the new instrument outputs 1 pulse per second which I could use to trigger the DAQCard. I normally sample at 100Hz.

Thank you for your assistance

Hi Andrew,

Yes it is possible with NI-CAN series 2 PCMCIA interfaces, however it's not as clean as a PCI or PXI setup would be. You need a special cable for the series two card, and you would need to physically connect lines from that cable to your DAQ card, and you would have to configure your system to use the PFI lines from your DAQ card to handle the synchronization correctly, but it can be done.

Hi Logan.
I have a SCXI-1600 and a PCMCIA CAN 2 Series 2, and the synchronization cable.
The clock who cans output is at most 5MHz, but the PCMCIA card can only receive 10 or 20 MHz Timebase.
Why is there a Dev1/20MHzTimebase on the SCXI-1600 if the only clock who cans output is at 5MHz?

Thanks a lot.

Barto,

The 20MHZ Timebase on the SCXI-1600 is designed to supply the internal clock for the data acquisition the module is usually performing.  The SCXI 1600 is not designed to be a timing signal routing device.  I was wondering were you found the information that the SCXI module could output the 5 Mhz clock. Did you see it in the SCXI 1600 specifications page?

I think it would be helpful if I had a little more information about what you wanted to achieve. I will get an SCXI 1600 and see if I can not understand more clearly what you are trying to explain. Please get back to me about those questions and let me know how I can help you further.

Have a great afternoon,

Michael
