how can i read the alarm registers from PC through modbus link?

Hi,I am trying to read the alarm registers which are send from the Electronic Control Module (ECM) of an engine.  These alarms are like (hi water temp, low oil pressure, air pressure ext.  Mounted sensors on the engine send signal to ECM and ECM analyzes it, then sends signals (registers) to panel view display to indicated the faults.

The panel view display have Modbus port.  I am trying to read these registers from PC/laptop computer through modbus connection.  Please advice me what steps should I take and what software and hardware should I get.

Hello 1025,

The MODBUS port on the display is probably an RS-232 port.  You may have one on your PC, or you may need a USB-RS232 converter.  There are different types of MODBUS connection, so if you can post the manual for your display module, we could help provide more information about this.

In order to communicate over MODBUS, I would HIGHLY suggest the LabVIEW DSC module.  This module makes it really easy to communicate to a MODBUS device.  If cost is an issue, then you could always look at the MODBUS LabVIEW libraries which are available for free download.  Please note that this library is more difficult to use and customize.

Have a great day.

O_Proulx points great areas to start.  If you are looking for more great information regarding MODBUS, National Instruments has written an excellent MODBUS DevZone

Cheers!
