From what I understand the termination resistors minimize signal reflections thereby helping to prevent CAN signal errors.

Hey JS at ARC!
NI-CAN: (Hex 0x3FF6206B) CAN bus problems detected (no ack), but communication is proceeding. This warning corresponds to CAN Error Passive state. Solutions: Verify that cabling is correct, devices are connected and operational, and proper bus power is applied.
According to our product manager for CAN: The error messages indicate that your motion device is not active on the bus.The USB device only powers his transceiver and not the BUS. You need to power your motion device as well, or the bus if the device needs buspower externally. This is the most prevalent issue with this error code; however, the original poster had a more unique problem. Please check the above. Thank you !

ok, so I finally got it it to work!
In the end the problem was really quite ridiculous. The cabling I had was correct but the issue came in that the power supply that I was using was not able to provide enough current. It was rated for the operational current for the device but after some dialogue with the manufacturer I found out that the in rush current was actually much higher. This would explain why I was able to receive data but not get response when I transmitted. So after connecting a higher current power supply everything was working fine.
Thanks to everyone who helped.
