Yes, I can empathise with that. Having passed the CLA once, and being a better programmer today than I was back then, means I think I too would rather take the 4-hour exam again. It's hard, but perfectly do-able. Whereas a CLA-R, with totally random and insane questions, is surely a high risk strategy.

That's most of the reason I took the CLA instead of CLD-R in March.

Interesting that some developers prefer to take the harder Architects Level CLA exam over a Developer Level CLD-R multichoice. These multi-choice exams have a fearful reputation it seems!

I would've taken the CLD over the CLAD on my way up if it were allowed, and not only because I thought I was capable.
There's not much I can say about the multi-choice exams that hasn't been said already.

My CLD-R is coming up and I'm strongly considering taking the CLA instead. I took the CLD-R two years ago and it's a very poor test. I would rather take the 4-hour CLD again to recertify. Any day of the week. I passed the CLD on the first try. It took 3 tries to pass the CLD-R...and I was a better programmer when I took it than I was when I took the original CLD test!
I am NOT looking forward to the CLD-R. I'd rather take another 4-hour programming test. I know how to program. I'm pretty decent at it. I'm not as good at poorly worded trivia tests.

Did you take the CLA before your CLD timed out?
NI Told me I have to take CLD-R becaouse my CLD was suspended before I took CLA ( timed out Jan this year ).
I'm scheduled to take CLA in 2 weeks from now anyway.
Does that mean I didn't have to take the CLD-R and I could have just jumped to CLA?

My CLD is current, so I can take the CLA instead of the CLD-R. I'm pretty sure your certification has to be current for you to take the next test. If your CLD wasn't current, then yes, you'd have to take the CLD-R before taking the CLA.

Yup. See messages 18 and 19 in this thread for further explanation

I let my CLD expire and am enjoying the extra year I have to prepare for the CLD-R. I passed this exam a few years ago but recall thinking that there was a lot of obscure material and that if I hadn't read so much on the forums I would have failed. I didn't sit for the CLA because, although I'm good at taking tests and believe I could pass this one, I don't feel that I do enough "architecting" to reasonably wear the title. I've never even coded an X-Control, for crying out loud.
