Liftoff!!

Was that "Felix" the cat???

That jump was astounding, it was a nail-biter moment for me when he was spinning!

There were a few nail biter moments. First when his face wasn't heating and then when he said the door wouldn't open. That was explained to him that the capsule wasn't completely depressurized. Then it looked like he was going into a panic attack. Maybe it just seemed that way because I was so nervous.

My question is how many of these can we do before there is no more helium available? It is a non-renewable resource (well some is produced in fusion reactions, but those are either vry very loud, or just around the corner)

Just change to hydrogen.

Fill a huge balloon with flammable gas and use it to transport people. What could possibly go wrong?

But the stock pile of helium is not infinite, some scientists predicting it being depleted to non-useful levels before the end of the century, and it is very useful in things other than balloons, super-cooling applications for one. As to hydrogen, it isn't as dangerous as people think, and many recent studies have decided that it was the fabric coating on the Hindenberg that caused the fire. In a case like this balloon launch, Hydrogen would be perfectly fine, with more lift as well.

Aah! Facepalm! Sometimes I really hate swype! I meant helium - NOT heroine! I still have not figured out how to edit a post from my ancient android phone.

Probably more money, short term, in heroin! The "kids' balloon" vendors are seeing rising prices, but if helium were priced based on its scarcity it would be very expensive. I guess we can mine if from some of the outer planets, but that will be pretty expensive, and not in the "immediate" future.
