Quick Drop

In Visual Studio I do not want my hands to leave the keyboard. In LV I do not want to leave the mouse. The transition breaks the flow in either case. LVspeakis intriguing, but I have visions of HAL.

If you find yourself digging through several layers of subpaletes, it is time to learn to customize. You'll be surprised at how a few functions really go a long way. Throw in a couple of custom VIs set to place contents and the sailing is quite smooth.

I would say that 90% of the functions I use are just one or two subpalletes deep.  Probably 50% of them are in the first palette I click on (loops, events, numeric/string/boolean functions).  I just can't see creating a shortcut for a For Loop when it is two clicks away.  And having to memorize all my shortcut keys.... nope!

Put the deeply nested functions that you use in your Favorites. Smiley Happy

What's in your Favorites? My top three:

In-Place Element Structure, Typecast, Variant to Data. -- oh, and Color Box Constant.

I can never find Typecast.... I must do a QD for this function at least a couple of times a week (ok so not that much time saved!).

A problem with customising QD is that when you go to take the CLD/CLA exams you are right back to square one with none of your fancy shortcuts, and then even slower on the exam 😞

When I took the CLD/CLA, I spent about one minute at the very beginning adding my most common Quick Drop shortcuts.  And another minute customizing Tools > Options settings.  And I guarantee those two minutes were more than made up for during the exams... 🙂

I know I would definitely get a lot of use out of it, as I'm sure others would. It makes my coding exponentially faster.

I finally had some time to post my Quick Drop prototype for use with LabVIEW 8.5.  You can get it here.
