Electrical Engineering: Principles and Applications

Description Book Information

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING: PRINCIPLES AND APPLICATIONS helps students learn electrical-engineering fundamentals with minimal frustration. Its goals are to present basic concepts in a general setting, to show students how the principles of electrical engineering apply to specific problems in their own fields, and to enhance the overall learning process. Circuit analysis, digital systems, electronics, and electromechanics are covered. A wide variety of pedagogical features stimulate student interest and engender awareness of the material’s relevance to their chosen profession.

New Features in the 5th Edition:

A Companion Website containing an abundance of additional resources for students. An access code to the site, located at www.pearsonhighered.com/hambley is included with the purchase of every new book or can be purchased separately at the website. Resources include:

* A folder that contains the m-files discussed in the book. Except for the examples that use the symbolic math, these files work equally well with MathScript. A MathScript folder contains the m-files that work with MathScript.

* A Multisim 10.1 folder that contains tutorials on the basic features of Multisim and circuit simulations for a wide variety of circuits from the book. See Appendix D for more information about this.

* Chapter 9 has been modified to reflect changes in the LabVIEW software.

* A new version of Appendix D now treats Multisim from National Instruments. Tutorials that will quickly provide students with the skills needed to apply Multisim to problems from the book are provided on-line. See Appendix D for more information on these Multisim tutorials. The previous version of Appendix D based on OrCAD 10.5 software is available on our website.

Previous Edition

Electrical Engineering: Principles and Applications by Allen R. Hambley is a leading textbook in teaching electrical engineering concepts to non EE majors. The range of topics covered includes: circuits, digital systems, electronics, and electromechanics.  Dr. Hambley introduces electrical engineering concepts using applications that span engineering disciplines.

The LabVIEW Student Edition bundled within each book can be used to solve homework problems and explore electrical engineering principals.NI Multisim can also be used to gain additional understanding of circuit theory and simulate circuit examples. Both tools provide a visual, interactive, hands-on environment for bridging the gap between theory and application.

LabVIEW 8.2 Student Edition is bundled with Electrical Engineering, so students own the software and license with their copy of the textbook. Practical applications are throughout the book, including a mechanical engineering application using LabVIEW in Chapter 9. A 13-page tutorial walks students through the steps of building the VI (virtual instrument).

NI Multisim can assist in bringing circuits in the textbook to life. This software is an interactive circuit design tool that uses industry-standard SPICE technology. Building circuits is a simple drag-and-drop process with built-in analysis tools that solidifies learning. Multisim has the capability to connect instruments such as multimeters and waveform generators to the components, so students can quickly verify their calculations.

Using an Older Edition?

The third edition of this popular Introduction to Electrical Engineering textbook includes an updated chapter on LabVIEW, data acquisition and virtual instrumentation. The book also includes a free copy of an older vrsion of the LabVIEW Student Edition.

This book develops skills in the following ares: basic circuit analysis, first- and second-order transients, steady-state AC circuits, resonance and frequency response, digital logic circuits, microcontrollers, computer-based instrumentation, diode circuits, electronic amplifiers, field-effect and bipolar junction transistors, operational amplifiers, AC and DC machines, and more.
