I have attached an example of how to calculate both the total energy absorbed and returned energy.
Unzip the attached an run the script ForceDisplacement.vbs
What this script does is integrate FD and assings peak energy to the max value of the integral.
The last value of the integrated channel corresponds the amount of energy that was lost when the load begin to decrease, so if you subtract the peak from energy lost, your left with returned energy, or the area between the hysteresis curves.
