How do I stop ddatafinder from loading automatically?

I put datafinder on a machine with multiple users many of whom will not be doing anything with Diadem and I would like to be able to eliminate the datafinder for those users.  Where do I go and what do I do to turn off the associated services that shows up in my system tray as a yellow circular icon?

Hello deserio,

The following steps will turn off the auto-start of the DataFinder:

  • Press and hold the WINDOWS key and then press "R"
  • A dialog will pop up. In this dialog, type "msconfig" and then click the "OK" button
  • The MicroSoft System Configuration Utility dialog will appear on your screen
  • Select the "Startup" tab
  • Scroll until you find the "DataFinder" entry and uncheck the box in front of the DataFinder text
  • Click "OK"
  • The System Configuration tool will ask you to restart Windows. Make sure all your work in other applications is saved and select "Restart"
  • Done

From now on, the DataFinder will not start with Windows.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions,

    Otmar

Is there a way to fire up datafinder when some users login but not when others log in?  Where is it getting started from?  Is it from the registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run (where I see the datafinder.exe with a /auto)?

Hi deserio,

What you can do is drag a shortcut to DataFinder in to the Startup folder for each user you want to have the program start up for.  On an XP machine, this is located at: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.  I hope this helps!

That would be a much preferred alternative.  Can I then go ahead and remove the LOCAL MACHINE registry entry?

Hi deserio,

I think it would be best if you followed the steps that Otmar suggested to stop the auto-start of DataFinder.  I would then move the short-cut to the DataFinder into the Startup folder for the desired users to see if this works for you.  Generally we do not recommend deleting files from the registry.
