6501 maximum input voltage

Hi,

I have a small (and i'm sure rather 'stupid' question) about DI on the NI-USB-6501 Board. Before i continue my project and have an electrician scetch the electrical blueprints, I wanted to have confirmed the following:

What is the maximum allowed voltage to be connected to a DI line on this board ? I see everywhere that it's 5v, what happens if you connect for example 12 or 24 volts ?

Electronics do not have blueprints. They have schematics and an electrician may not be the best suited. You would want someone with an electronics background (much different skill set than an electrician who does house wiring).

 

However, all you have to do is read the User Guide and Specifications. The consequences of exceeding the input voltage are explained in there.

As Dennis alluded to, electronics are very picky about the voltages applied to them.

 

If you absolutely need higher voltage capabilities, check out the products that NI makes specifically for this purpose, such as this 24V USB digital input device: http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/202026  

 

You'll want to pay attention to both the maximum voltage the device can handle, as well as the voltage at which the device recognizes a change of value (from 0 --> 1 and 1 --> 0).
