I would definetly go with an SSR as I get a little nervous wiring an external supply into something that already has a supply. I believe most SSRs to be optical devices where a standard relay you energize a coil which has to make a mechanical movement which requires considerably more power to make that action where as a SSR the power required is the power to operate an LED.
