To resolve the issue on windows 7 we prevented the computer from sleeping or hibernating.
We are also using a X series 6321. I have yet to test if the behaviour of this is similar when sleeping. I will test this for you soon.

As far as I know, it makes sense that if you're using software to control your hardware, things can go wrong when you go into sleep mode. Anyway, as you've already mentioned, I think the best solution is to just prevent your computer from going in to sleep mode in the first place.
