Ports (other than printer/parallel) that could be used as a ttl trigger for an external device.

I am setting up laptop that does not have a serial or printer/parallel port (for which, there are great LabVIEW examples about writing to digital lines).

I was wondering if there are any functions/examples to simply write a ttl signal (that will be used to trigger an external data acquisition device) to either an ethernet or a USB port? This triggering signal will be used to start the external data acquisition system at the same time as a LabVIEW program executes (delays on the order of up to a ms are acceptable).

Hi Jesse,

I haven't seen any LabVIEW examples that  do what you want. Maybe someone here has done something similar before. Have you considered  using a Digital I/O board? We do have some low cost USB ones  that should work for you.  Take a look at this link for more information. Thanks!

You can find usb to serial port converters that are getting lower and lower in cost. Then you could get around the coding problems and have all those examples available to you. I use them frequently with my laptop.
