USB-6501 with hard real-time Linux

Dear friend,

I'm considering to use a NI-USB-6501 device in a hard real-time application under Linux with RTAI or RTLinuxPro. As I understood the DAQmx C functions provided by NI to read/write to the device cannot be really applied in a hard real-time thread.

Both RTAI and PRLinuxPro has USB driver for hard real-time thread, so, I would probably able to send and receive data from NI-USB-6501. However, to set the I/O directions and read/write to the ports I should know what sequences of bits should be sent to the device. I could not find any document about this on the WEB.

Could you help me on this issue?

With kind regards

Greetings to all fellow developers!

Great question about possibilities to use USB-6501 with hard real-time Linux.
I am considering doing the same with this or any similar products to use on products competing on global markets. Either will NI guys become little more helpful or we will get blown by the wind to their competitions product.

Somebody will realize (/have already realized) that RT-programming is moving to Linux...  Will it be first NI or somebody else?

Warm regards to everyone on line
