Hello Everyone,
I've just been speaking with Todd about the LabVIEW Idea Exchange and what to do with all of the ideas. There have been many ideas suggested (over 900!) and we've been getting suggestions to start moving ideas that will not be implemented to a different status. Right now, the bulk of the ideas are in the "New" status.
We've done some brainstorming some possible actions and would like your feedback. Our idea right now is to "clean house" once a month for all ideas below a certain vote threshold and time period. For example, if an idea has not reached 20 Kudos in 6 months it could be moved into an Archived status. Todd has found that 20 votes seems to be a good breaking point in the data.
1. What do you think the vote threshold should be?
2. What should the time period be?
3. Once the ideas are archived, should we disable voting and/or commenting?
4. What should we do with the ideas? We could move them into an archived status, move them to a completely different idea exchange for archived ideas, delete them, etc.
5. If changing the status is the answer, what should the name of the status be? Archived was my first thought but I'm sure you have more suggestions.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Regards,

NOT!
I write down all of my ideas in logs and never throw them away. Put them some place where searches will find them but do NOT delete.

I would say don't delete or disable commenting or voting. Just change the status. It's possible that an idea will gain traction again the future, at which point its status can be checked again.
As for the name, how about "back burner"?

Just for the record, I feel strongly against deleting ideas but it was brought up so I wanted to mention it.
I have a "wack em with an ugly stick" emoticon. Do you want me to find it so you can use it on whoever came up with that idea?

1 & 2 Kudos threshold + staleness. May not be the best metric. IMHO this might justify a review but not a criteria in and of itself. I would support a "for review" status that permits voting but not further discussion.
Here's my thoughts for flow- Idea x is posted And its status is "NEW". It generates 10-30 replys for a few weeks (2-6) where the Idea is debated and alternate solutions or improved methods may be presented. Lock the thread Change its status to "In Review" and reformulate the proposed change in terms of what is the percieved need and the percieved concensus solution (Keeping in mind that the words "Or simillar" should allways be used). Post the reformulated proposal linking the original thread in a "Review"section with a poll- Rank 0-10 and allow voting and discussion on the desirability of the reformulated concesus or any alternate ideas proposed. After a 2-6 week "review" the Idea could be "Submitted" or "Archived" to preserve the value of the discussions. Archived ideas preserve the value of the discussion and add to the body of knowldge so they need to remain available but out of the clutter. Submitted Ideas then need NI Development to make a determination of priority and move to either "in development" , "for Future development", or "Not feasable." "for Future development", or "Not feasable" will wellcome 3rd party involvement in implementing a solution and a third party might approach for lead in this feature moving it to "In Independant Development".
Super Hot hitters (say +75 kudos) or the NO DUH ones (like getting rid of the "Old Style" Boolean constants) can be moved to "In development" as well without further discussion
After review Lock the thread so it can be searched but is no longer an active discussion. However a linked thread should be made available for the Dev team to provide feedback on efforts and get feedback on features. e.g. "Hi, I'm developing feature x" would you like it to have "This attribute" or "That one"? Should it do that by default? or should you need to select it (Hint : search the Beta page for this phrase; "That's what I get for asking rhetorical questions" )
In simplest terms we have a flow
New>Review>In Development>In Beta>Availble(Version.subversion)
This flow allows for the forum- NI and Users - to clarify a uncertain concensus and provides both a rating system and a feedback method to help guide development. But does require some changes to the board organization. (Since it doesn't have any to speek of is this a bad thing)
OK -enough from me I'm out of pennys, anyone else care to supply their two cents

I feel no suggested idea should be deleted. And most importantly the so called "deletable" ideas should also be considered whiule searching for ideas and this will avoid again posting the same idea and getting the stick again.
I also feel 20 kudos to be just great and will also suggest not disabling the reply even if it has got no kudos. That could trigger a conversation which might result in a great idea...

"A Whack on the Side of th Head - A guide to creative thinking" (Author unknown) discussed the idea that "there is no bad idea". THe story to back it up went...
"A city wanted to take care of a litter problem. Trash cans everywhere did not do the trick. Brain-storming .... "Lets pay people to put stuff in cans"... "Coin dispenser on trash cans" ... "Joke of the day recorded on tape changed when can was emptied, trigered by photodetector" ... people were looking for trash to get their joke of the day.
So idea not acepted can and should serve as inspiration for other ideas.
Extreme examples:
If I was sitting in front of my first PC that was so slow that I would not load the mouse driver since it would kill the CPU and you told me 'We could use a mouse to draw circuit diagrams...' I would have thought it was ...."
ANd reagarding Ada Lovelace...
So no-toss ideas.

Who exactly know if an idea is stupid, craisy or genuis advanced?
Every book, article, workshop (,.... ) dealing with ideas or creative enigineering (i ever get in contact with) will tell you to never 'delete' ideas nor to classify them in the first round because they might inspire other ideas. And it's a good thing that you don't see the comments in the first view.
New ideas should be marked as new and after some weeks they are 'known','archived','on hold','old','grumpy'
