For some reason I can't reply to the Ideas Forum. hmmm.
I wanted to reply to this thread but I couldn't.
I was going to say that instead of using openG code, and searching for a decoration, currently I use a VI that gets the display area from a control.
It references any VI in the call chain and as long as the label of the control is hidden the Front panel is snapped to the bounds of this control (Classic - simple string) - colouring the control and it's border allows the ease of seeing the display area as altenbach suggested, and dragging it out allows it to be resized easily.
There is a small performace hit with this VI (it takes about 150-200ms to run), but it only needs to run once on each VI that is loaded.
I'm not sure my boss would let me put the code here, but it's so simple that I'm sure you're all capable of writing it in 5 mins.
An alternative option for those that want it.
Solved! Go to Solution.

Doesn't the "Post a Comment" edit box show up at the bottom of that thread?
Or do you have some other problem like hitting the "Post your comment" button isn't working?
What browser and OS are you using? Is it just that particular thread, or do you have problems with other threads in the Ideas Exchange?

That would be the one - This appears to be a unique set of forum boards, and you have to be at the bottom of the last page to find the "Post a Comment" box.
I was looking for the Reply button - The inconsistency on this site caught me out.
Why this special case Laura?

Hi James,
The Idea Exchange is a fundamentally different entity than a forum board and has very different features to facilitate voting, ability to sort ideas by votes, categorization, statuses, etc. I agree the commenting could be easier and there are usability issues that our community users experience. I have passed along all of our feedback to our forum vendor and we will see some changes and improvements once we are able to upgrade our forums which I still hope can happen soon.
Thanks,
Laura

It also seems to use a different login mechanism than regular forums. Many time when I hit forums.ni.com, and also /ideas, I see at the top that I'm logged in (I see my correct user name) and a Sign Out option. But... I can't post or reply. I have to sign out. And when that happens signing in is difficult - the links to sign in hang without displaying a page, or I login and everything is exactly as it was before - I still can't post or reply.
Also, I don't (always) see the 'edit' option. I found a typo in one of my postings, and cannot for the life of me figure out how to edit that posting.

Hi sbus,
The Idea Exchange and the Forums share a login. You should click the "Sign In" link just below the heading "NI Discussion Forums" on forums.ni.com (or any other page) and then be signed in to both areas. Also, even if you are not signed in, clicking the New Message, New Idea, or Kudos button will automatically send you through the sign in process so I'm not sure why you are unable to post. Do you have difficulty signing into ni.com if you go to ni.com/profile and click the login link? Does that also hang?
The edit option is available from the Options menu on an idea or message for 10 minutes after you complete you post. If you would like to modify an idea or message after that window, please use the moderator notification and indicate what should be changed.
Thanks,
Laura
