Flash Embedded in signature

Today I read some threads (including one of mine) where people were answering having a Flash movie embedded in the signature. Since we do not have Flash Movie player installed in the office it is very time consuming to read those threads.
First the browser needs some seconds to get the Flash, detecting that there is a script in it, deciding to display a message that the script may slow down my machine until the risc to stop it. And he wants an answer to stop the script or to continue.

Maybe it's not against any forum rules but it's uncomfortable for me.

I cringed just reading the title of the thread, but then I read it. I assume you're refering to Philip's signature (which I didn't realize was Flash and which doesn't seem to work right now).

In general, I don't think embedded Flash should be disabled. It would be useful if it could be disabled only in the signatures, but I don't know if that's possible. One thing I would suggest is simply contacting the moderators and asking them to ask the user to change his signature while explaining the reasoning. In this case, the goal is a worthy one and I assume Michael A. can create something similar which will be an image or HTML based.

I see he's already aware of it.

On Firefox with the NoScript extension installed it doesn't get pulled, and instead shows like this:

Gotta say that the NoScript extension is awesome.

Hello tst,

yes Philip was only the first of the LAVA members with that signature I have seen. He knows the reason why it is happening he can decide to do something about it or not. I expected some more "Me too" entries here but it seems I'm the only one.

Complaining about flash on the internet is a futile excersize. What is wrong with flash?

I don't think anybody is saying that there's anything wrong with Flash, the various "flash is evil" articles that have been written over the years notwithstanding. Smiley Happy I think the original point was why do you really need to have a Flash signature?

For those old enough to remember, it used to be that when it was all ASCII, people would have ASCII art as their signatures and people bitched at those who were making their signatures half a page long just so they could have an ASCII drawing of a Tie Fighter. Then HTML came along and people were putting in these huge images for their signatures which took forever to download. And this was before broadband! Now, I guess it's Flash's turn now. Wonder what it will be next. Smiley Wink

man, it's been a long time since I've seen an ascii star wars reference

and I'm guessing .flv will be the next craze to hit signatures.  who wouldn't want to see dramatic gopher after every post in a technical forum Smiley Very Happy

I used ASCII art to output our company logo to the debug output of a PXI RT system. showed nicely to anyone that hooked a VGA device Smiley Very Happy
