Forum Rank Change Proposal

I support BeCeGa's idea of Top 10%, 20% etc. (in addition to the current 3 bars). It's something like a Chinese friend said abt his schooling grades while applying for admission to a US college.

Nevertheless, this does not mean the rank criterias will not require updation. I guess, something (like 50 replies) that was very difficult many years ago, is not so difficult now, and the "difficulty" has a relative meaning which should be updated (but setting it to 1000 or 2000 is toooo much I guess) with time and circumstances.

But a Top x% in "some board" is a good idea.

I'm not sure if this has been covered in the various related topics of Forum changes, but would it be possible to prevent a poster from marking their own posts as the "Solution" to the original question? The mechanism shouldn't be too difficult to implement - after all a poster cannot give Kudos to him (or her) self. This seems to be a continuing issue with new members on several boards. It might become more pertinent if Forum changes are made where the number of solved questions is incorporated into ones rank.

I think giving "Kudos" and marking "solution" are two different things.

Someone cannot give Kudos to the self, but must be able to mark "Solution" to one's own post.

Someone may abuse this, but then this will not take this user to a better place. I mean, it would be in 1 or 2 cases, and then people would not support this user.

But there ARE genuine cases where the original poster found the answer by himself/herself. There will be many valuable inputs by other users, but the question poster must have power to say that "....this..." was the issue, and finally by doing "....this..." (which none of the "above" replies mentioned) I found a solution.

I guess, this is one more such situation where there should be a possibility to mark more than 1 replies as a "solution" , which in this case, means, a reply and one's own comment, could both be marked as solutions in different situations.

I think, perhaps this is not the right thread to discuss this issue.

Since the engagement attribute appears to be based on percentages and some sort of weighting factors it might make sense to also include some weighting factor or multiplier based on teh numbers of kudos received versus total number of posts. For example someone may not have a very high post count however they have received lots of kudos. This would imply that that the quality of their posts is quite high. Conversely someone who has a very high post count with very few kudos are probably posting lots of questions (not necessarily a bad thing), lots of "me too" type of posts or lots of noise. It would be nice to be able to recognize someone who is posting quality posts even if they haven't posted very often.

I second with Mark's point, about considering more quality posts over more posts.

But, I guess this is what is happening right now. By posting a lot, someone can become "Active" but not "Proven."

I curious about how the ranks are actually awarded. For instance at the moment I am simply ranked as "Regular". I registered in August of 2003. I wasn't very active until the last couple of months. In that time though I have achieved the following statistics:

Tags: 25

Authored Solutions: 4

Kudos Received: 57

Kudos Given: 93

There is another user listed as a "Proven Regular" who registered in March of 2003, has a total of 27 posts, 4 Kudos Received and 1 Kudo Given.

There is another user that has significantly higher numbers then me who is listed as "Trusted Active Veteran" who only registered last year.

I am not here solely for the ranking but it seems that there is some definite inequity as to how it is being awarded. It just seems a bit strange and very inconsistent.

This explains the current situation:

Proven means they got an average of more than 4.5 stars. I think this was frozen when the stars were changed to kudos.

Active means they have more than 200 posts.

Regular is affected by number of logins. Since you haven't logged in much, the system doesn't consider you a veteran.

Yes the bars are for the most part frozen while they get things fixed.

If it makes any difference, you are a Proven Trusted Veteran in my book.

Thanks for clearing that up. At least there is a reason for the varying levels that people have. As for logins being counted for someone to be considered a veteran doesn't that effectively water down someone's chances if the stay logged in all the time?

And thanks Ben for the nod.

Oh, so there is a reason behind me and many others being Regulars for some time now.

Like I do. Sometimes, staying logged in for 4 days, without turning off the computer.

But I suppose ranking on the forums is not the only way to see our professional status. This could be one measure, but not the only. I hope some company doesn't provide job/promotions on the basis of forum ranks on NI site. Though, this could be considered as well.

But it surely has advantage inside the community. It gives a psychological advantage, and people "often" think positively if a comment comes from someone of a higher rank.
