NI Discussion Forum Upgrade - November 2, 2007

Follow-up regarding changing subscription preferences as possible cause of slow-down:

While changing the option to "None" has mostly improved matters, it hasn't completely eliminated it. I did go back and clear out subscribed threads older than a couple of months, which I do anyway.

Still, setting the option to "None" means I no longer get notified of any follow-ups since the thread is never added to the list of subscriptions, so I don't think this is a good permanent solution. A good temporary fix, OK, but I think the fundamental issue has to be addressed.

Hmmm... I would hope just a couple subscriptions would not make a big difference.

I talked to Lithium about this further today and learned that floated posts can also affect page load times, so you if you have many floated posts you might try removing a few.

Lithium is aware of the performance issues that we are experiencing and have been actively working to improve performance for all of their communities.  I will continue to monitor our situation closely and take action as needed.

Thanks,
Laura

Other than our ISP who does work often in our area which might explain some speed difference (unlikely??), the speed difference is huge.

I clicked on this thread, which was displayed immediately.  Hit reply, got the window instantaneously.

At other times, when it is slow, it can take 30 seconds for the page (thread) to appear.  I did notice that the speed difference affects other areas of the site, not just the forum.

Lemme check the PXI HW again...

Access at the momment is great.  Pages load immediately.

Maybe when we notice that the forum is slower than usual, we should also check other areas of the site.  It could be a site issue, not a forum issue.

RE: Forum speed

At 7:00 AM Eastern US, using my 5M fiber link from home the speed is good 3-10 seconds for new page.

It definately seems to slow durring the day.

After work and back at home about 6:00 PM Eastern US the forums are dog slow again.

I'd suspect a server upgrade is called for to support the forums.

If you (NI) are interested in us posting, this should be fixed since the screen updates are actually inhibitting my activity!

Laura,

in this post, i was making a reply, which somehow got submitted without my agree. i edited it, and it took me some time to finish write down the answer. as i tried to submit it i got a message that the time for editing has expired. so i coped the text, and wrote a new post.

then i looked at the thread and saw 5 !!! posts with the original cutted answer. the only difference between each post was a new word got inserted...very weird.

anyhow i guess you can delete them (except the full response of course 🙂 )

Thanks!

Hi Gabi,

I deleted the extras.  This bug has been reported to the forum vendor previously, and I just confirmed that they know about it.  It is a more difficult bug to fix, so I will continue to delete messages as needed.

Thanks,
Laura
