Is it possible that the forum software has problems when the number of replies is around a byte?
This is probably OK.
Just a wild guess: I would expect this to happen if e.g. an offtopic SPAM post gets deleted. You don't want to renumber all the posts in order not to break existing links, but you still need to report the correct total number of posts.
But the links don't point to the number of the post, but to the ID of the post.
