New profile for each PC?

Laura,

Each time I use another PC to access the forum, I seem to get a new profile.

At the moment, I seem to have at least 4 profiles, all with the same name. This is next to a few others from old jobs. I did try to change them, but somehow these also got converted to new profiles as well.

In the KUDO list, I am (at the moment) at possition 59, 262, 284 and 1482, all with the same user name (Wiebe@CARYA).

So here are my questions:

Can these profiles be joint? I can come up with the user names and passwords, but all email addresses should be the same as well. These should be two or three different email addresses at most.

How can I avoid this? I am about to switch computer again, and I intent to use the web interface (am using outlook now). But there is no way to choose between the 4 profiles with the same name. I don't want to start over again with my credentials.

Regards,

Wiebe.

The profiles here are linked to the NI profile. (http://www.ni.com/myni/).

Over the years, I have used many new computers and always got the same profile, so I wonder what's different in your case.  Are you sometimes posting via newsgroups?

Altenbach,

Thanks for the reply. No, I don't use newsgroups, but I do use outlook. I don't think I get a new profile every time I log on to another PC, but somehow I got at least 4 profiles.

I think that, even if you'd try, it wouldn't be possible to create the 4 profiles I have. All the names are the same, and I don't think that is allowed.

I'll be out for this year. Happy Christmas and new year!

Wiebe.

Hi Wiebe,

When you post using Outlook, you are actually posting through the newsgroup interface rather than this web interface and it gets attributed to this user: http://forums.ni.com/ni/profile?user.id=37618

When you log into the web interface and post, your posts get attributed to this user: http://forums.ni.com/ni/profile?user.id=4177

You have two older user accounts that only posted through the newsgroups.  These two accounts list different email addresses and the current account you use to post via Outlook doesn't list an email address.  Because the newsgroup interface does not authenticate user names it has allowed you to create duplicates.

I don't know of a way to merge accounts.  I'm going to look around and think about this to see if there is something we can do.  By my count, you are almost to the 2,000 post mark!

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Laura

Hi Wiebe,

I guess this is mainly you because you have logged in with

a different account on each PC and have not logged out

from them. One thing I have observed is that once you login

into forums , it keeps you logged in for a while until you force

log out.

Advice you to go to NI forums on each PC and force logouts

from all of them. Let me know if this problem persistes even after that.

Sundar,

I'm pretty sure this is not what happened. At least not hundreds of times!

Thanks,

Wiebe.

Laura,

Your explaination about why outlook creates another account is plausible. I seem to have 4 accounts though:

http://forums.ni.com/ni/profile?user.id=4177

http://forums.ni.com/ni/profile?user.id=37618

http://forums.ni.com/ni/profile?user.id=29566

http://forums.ni.com/ni/profile?user.id=25938

All as Wiebe@CARYA, some with different capitals.

And http://forums.ni.com/ni/profile?user.id=15065 as AIR, indeed with a different email address, although I created my first carya account by modifying this one. Or perhaps another AIR account, and that did succeed. I remember I used to have 2 AIR accounts as well. Oh well...

Thanks,

Wiebe.

Hi Wiebe,

I apologize, I have not looked into this yet for you!  I can give you a quick run down of your accounts though:

http://forums.ni.com/ni/profile?user.id=4177  this is the account you've used to post here and is used any time you log into the web interface of the forums.

http://forums.ni.com/ni/profile?user.id=37618 - this is an account that is used to post from the newsgroups (Outlook) from December 2004 until present.  An email does not show up for this account.

http://forums.ni.com/ni/profile?user.id=29566 - this is also an account from the newsgroups, but it stopped being used when we upgraded the forums in November 2004. It uses a different email.

http://forums.ni.com/ni/profile?user.id=25938 - this account was from 2003.  It uses the email you are using now.

http://forums.ni.com/ni/profile?user.id=15065 - this also uses a different email and came from the newsgroups.

I'm still going to check on the merging accounts issue.

Thanks,

Laura
