Hi all,

Just to let you know that I am monitoring, this last instance of a few 1 star ratings looks to be a misunderstanding of the popular opinion of the rating system.  The user probably assumed that any stars were good.  This is actually how I think the rating system is supposed to be used, but with our "Trusted" and "Proven" ranks being based off of ratings, 5 stars becomes the only acceptable rating.

I hope to have an update on rating system changes soon.

Regards,
Laura

A factor also not to be forgotten is the (to a certain extent) self-regulating aspect of the forums.  We're all in the same boat so quite often, when we see a single star being incorrectly given, we correct it with a 5.  It doesn't quite take away the pain of a single star (something which honestly doesn't bother me any more) but it helps.

But unfortunately those with little experience ( low post count) that are in the greatest danger of being slighted by the rating.

This sounds so much like what happened with our EPRs (Enlisted Performance Reports) when I was in the Air Force.  For the first number of years I was in, ratings were 1 thru 9.  The system had become so inflated that the only way you would get anything less than a 9 was if you really screwed up.  So, the system changed to a 1 thru 5 rating in hopes of fixing it.  It was heavily emphasized that in order to give someone a 5 it had to be heavily justified.  I mean you had to be the type of person who could walk on water.  At first I had one that was a 3, then the next year was a 4.  It gradually evolved right back to the point where if you didn't get a firewalled EPR (all 5's), you were basically a screw-up.  Any rating system will become inflated unless there is great effort expended in constantly monitoring it and fairly enforcing it.  In other words, it's next to impossible and not practical.  Humans will be humans.

i heard they were giving out free stars here, to i tought to join in Smiley Very Happy

to the point: Altenbach solution seems very interresting ( was it 8 pages ago?) altough it will probably only ease the pain.
generally in help forum you would expect a "did it help" rating, with no stars.

in this specific forum we could have the same solution - no help, little help, very helpfull -  with on top of that a "5 stars" button for outstanding and very special posts.
instead of "trusted" and "proven" member based on stars, he would be based on quality of help itself. the stars would still stand, but more difficult to earn. below each poster would stand the nb of stars he recieved overall, not average. that would also make the difference between real veterans and newer posters (like me 🙂 ).
