It could start a Star Wars...

May the Force be With You..  And don't be shy to post....   I'm sure people can check your replies and provide "corrections" if necessary 😉

Glad you brought that up!  And I did like your post

Paul,

Dont lets the 1 stars put you off, if you can help, then do so.

I've given up with the stars a long time ago, there never seemed any consistence with them.

Personally, I just concentrate on the total number of stars received. Smiley Tongue

By completely ignoring the average star rating, even a single-star rating can be seen as positive.  I'd like to think that people will judge my answers (and questions) based on their content, and not on their decorations.  Those who don't know the difference will learn with time.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again.  Don't over-value the stars people.  The best stars in this forum are the people willing to post questions and answers.  I've also found in the past that I've been reluctant to post something which I thought would get me a bunch of single stars, but after posting got me a bunch of 5-stars.  If I had valued the stars too much, I wouldn't have posted.  That shouldn't happen.  Out input is required, whether we "earn" stars for it or not.

Just my opinion.

Shane.

PS Even if I get a whole bunch of single stars, 1500 or so single stars means I'm posting a lot. A lot of bad answers which kind of makes me infamous! Cool. Smiley Very Happy

I agree with all of the above.

But I would like to focus on "what it is" rather "what it could should be".

I want the noobs to be encouraged rather than discouraged.

If the system can be fixed (we have been crying about this for years) fine.

But lacking a fix,

toss it.

Here's a question.  Why through out this thread, almost every reply has been given a 5 star rating?  Looking at them, they are pretty much just a single user giving a 5 star rating.  This thread is a decent conversation, but it is just a conversation and most of the replies really don't need a rating at all.

Perhaps a 5 star rating shouldn't show up on a message until a few ratings have been given.  At first glance a 1 rating of 5 stars looks more valuable than 10 ratings that average 4.5 stars.

Here is some weird math.  In this message  http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=11755#M11755, the message shows up with 3 stars.  Hover over it, and it says 2 ratings with a 3.1 average.  How is that possible?  That would mean a total of 6.2 stars were given out between 2 readers.  There is no way roundoff errors could explain that.

These posts are old!

In the early days, (before the new format) the max rating was 4 stars, while now the max is 5 stars. The old ratings were scaled to the new format during the transition.

One possible scenario. One old rating of 2 and one of 3, average=2.5 out of 4.

Scaled to the new rating 2.5 *(5/4) = 3.125, or about 3.1 as observed. 😉

All clear? 🙂

Laura,

When can we expect to hear an update on this issue?

I would be happy with a date by which we will know a date when this issue will be addressed.

The "rotten vegetables" must go.

Thank you,

Ben

I'd also be curious with what Laura proposes as a solution or alternative..
