Select or remove default URL when inserting a link

In the message composition window, when the Insert/Edit Link button is clicked, the Link URL contains the default value "http://".  More than once I've pasted a link into this field without deleting the default, and the link is obviously then wrong!  My guess is that links are much more often pasted than typed in.

I suggest that one of these changes be made:

  1. have the default URL selected so that a paste will overwrite it, or
  2. remove the default URL, or
  3. check the URL once entered and flag it if it is obviously wrong

#1 is my preference, as those wanting to type a URL just press End first, which they currently need to do anyway. Anyone else have any strong feelings on this?

Silly me - I've posted before searching, rather than the other way around.  This has already been noted here, here and here.  Mea culpa.

Yeah, and one that still hasn't been fixed. Must not be a high-level priority for them.

Yes' it's one of the longstanding very annoying bugs. It exists also on every lithium forum elsewhere, and there are quite a few.

The most intuitive way would be to show a tpyical example (e.g. "http://SomeSiteElsewhere.com/main.htm") but greyed out whenever the field is otherwise empty. This text would immediately disappear as soon as we start typing (or pasting) something.
