Is there a way in the new forum to subscribe to postings by a specific user? Thanks.

Matthew Williams -

Unfortunately, subscribing to a particular user isn't supported in the new system. We apologize for the inconvenience.

The only suggestion I have would be to periodically go to the profile for that particular user and click Find All Posts by this User.

Thanks,

Thanks for the reply. I'll certainly miss that feature. I found it very useful and educational to eavesdrop on a handful of my favourite experts. Please add my vote for implementing this to the wish list. Thanks.

It time for me to dust of this request and rais it again.

I would like to be able to subscribe to individuals as was possible in the old Exchange.

I humbly request this be concidered.

I second this motion, but I personally believe that the general ability to subscribe by keyword is a fundamentally more important feature (and maybe a superset of Ben's request).

My reasoning here is that I think keyword subscription is the best way to drive participation, especially when it comes to vertical knowledge domains, either within LabVIEW or across the measurement and automation spectrum. It's a great way to keep domain experts involved without forcing them to read every message, and it was also (in the past) a good way to motivate internal NI employees to tune in and participate. For every Brian Tyler at NI who values closeness with the user community and makes participation something of a priority, there are probably 5-10 more developers who would participate if only they were actively notified of threads that are of interest to them.

NI should also see motivation here, because keyword-based subscriptions would make it possible for them to extend their User Profile system to encourage users to set up a targeted forum subscription when they initially register. Of course, the marketing folks will always be inclined to guard their NI->Customer e-mail turf and focus on revenue-generating messages, but as time passes, I think the tremendous benefits of a large, active, loyal customer base become more and more apparent.

Anyway, Ben, I agree that this is an area that needs to be pushed forward.

So how do we do this?

Ben, if you will look at the subscription tab of the profile page, there is an option at the bottom of using a search query for subscription. I'm guessing that's what Molly used. I suspect that you can't use it to subscribe to multiple things, though.

Hi tst,

Then all we have to do is get a document explaining how to use this feature and Molly can cross off an item on the To-Do-List.

The keyword subscription feature is very simple.

There are two ways to configure it:
1 - Go to the Subscriptions tab in your forum profile, enter the keyword(s) there, and save your changes.
2 - Search in the community and click Subscribe to this Search from the results page.

What happens next:
Any time any word you have subscribed to is used anywhere in the community, you will get an email notification immediately.

Unfortunately, the search subscriptions are not able to do any form of any advanced searching or filtering, so choose your keywords wisely. 🙂  Also, there are not currently any configuration options on the frequency of the email notifications.  These are things we know would be very useful and we will keep them on the wish list.

Hope this helps!
