The same thread multiple times

Hi community

There are often users, that post the same thread again and again, just because it is not answered within seconds.

I don't know if I'm the only one who gets upset about that, but maybe this could be avoided somehow.

What do you think about that?

I think in many cases it is by mistake, e.g. struggling with the forum mechanics. It could also be a forum malfunction, e.g. if the submit button creates a page error while in reality the post got submitted.

I am not sure it is a serious problem, but it could be handled by the forum code. For example it could keep a MD5 digest cache of all new message for 15 minutes. Any new message that generates a cache hit would be rejected. Maybe there are already some measures in place?

One reason for multiple posts is that the tab key "activate" the Send button, as discovered here.

This is something that should be corrected.

Molly ? in the next forum update ?

While I think your theory is valid, can we explain why some of the repeat posts actually have one additional word in them?

Example:
Post 1: This is my
Post 2: This is my new
Post 3: This is my new car.

Is this happening on a slow connection where the person accidentally presses the tab button some time after they typed "my" and each space in their post is clicking on the "submit" button and committing the message?

If this is the case, I'm so excited we might have figured it out!  I will test tonight from my slow dial-up at home to see if I can reproduce it.

Thanks!

Hi Molly,

This is exactly what happened to me while doing last minute modifications to the E-List report. I 'm not sure if this is related to connection speed (I have an asymetric DLS, with 256 Kb upload rate), but it's definitely related to the tab/space key combination. I didn't explore much further the possible key interactions, to avoid too many dumb posts !

I can see that you are excited : you forgot to attach a picture of your new car !

The problem still consists. I have had this poblem with multiple posts two times in the meantime. I think it is independed from the speed from the connection speed.
