Why is the search on bottom?

Maybe this got covered in the superlong thread I don't have time to read, but I have two comments on searching.

- Why are posts in an individual thread listed so that multiple posts for the same thread are listed for one search?

- Why is the 'Search' box for the forum (where you enter text to search for) on the bottom of the page, where you have to scroll down to find it? That's really counterintuitive until you've learned to remember that it's at the bottom and that you need to scroll down to search for something. My guess is that the majority of the users who get on the forum immediately want to search for something, not read the latest random posts (although I'm sure there are users who do that also, just to say that the two requirements aren't mutually exclusive when it comes to placement of the search box).

This is being checked by NI. I don't believe we got an answer yet. I believe this is actually related to the search engine as well.

Don't go there. The search engine has a multitude of problems and this isn't the biggest one. If by superlong thread you mean this, it was discussed there. There is a search box at the top of the page (all the way up), which actually works better. By the way, the thread isn't that long. If you want to see a long thread, look at "enthusiasts 2". Also, you'll find that most of the thread is consisted of complaints by veterans about their age ("When I was in Nam..."). Besides, the longest threads are the most fun. Search for "Proverbs" to find another nice, long, thread.

m3nth -

"Why are posts in an individual thread listed so that multiple posts for the same thread are listed for one search?"
This is the expected behavior of the search engine in the forums. I have submitted all the feedback from this community to the forum developers to request that they allow it to be configurable so you can see individual messages or entire threads as search results. In the meantime, tst is right that we have the search engine in the header of the page that returns a single result per thread.

"Why is the 'Search' box for the forum (where you enter text to search for) on the bottom of the page, where you have to scroll down to find it?"
This is a question we asked also. 🙂 We were able to move it up on the main page of the forums, but haven't been able to move it up on the rest of the pages yet.

Note: The searches from the bottom of the pages only return results from the board you are currently in. They do not return results from the entire community.

Thanks!

M3nth,

Seems like we're all asking the same question 🙂

As tst says... try not to use the one at the bottom.. it's ... hummm..
It's behavior is unpredictable...

As for the multiple listing I'll have to read Molly's response on this (I asked the same question is the "Xtreme thread")

=== EDIT ===

Hi Molly,

I read your answer on the bottom search engine..
That's what I thought it did... but it didn't work for me.. I tried to use it to find some of my own posts within LV.. and it didn't find anything.

The search was : serial

I did this while reading a LV question of the subject.
I shall experiment with the search engine again and report my findings.

R.
