cFP-2100 Comm failure with Status light solid

I have a cFP-2100 with cFP-TC-120, cFP-AI-110, cFP-AO-210, cFP-DIO-550, and a cFP-CB-1 per I/O module.

My labview program complained that it couldn't find this module, but it could see 2 other cFP-2100 bricks in the system.  The faulted brick had the Status light On solid Red, as well as the green Power light and the "A" light On (B,C,D off).  Each of the I/O modules had Power light On but Ready light Off.  I cycled power on the module and checked the ethernet cable.  Same result.  I checked to see if MAX could see this brick.  It could see the other 2 bricks, but not this one.

So I did some debugging (at least I think that's what we could call it).  I pulled all the CB-1 modules, same result.  I pulled all the I/O modules, same result.  I disconnected ethernet cable, same LEDs.  I re-seated the cFP-2100 module into the backplane, same result.  I tried power up with DISABLE VI dip switch set, same result.  With SAFE MODE set, same result.  I tried RESET IP and SAFE MODE, then tried to discover the remote system in MAX, not there.

Is there any way to rescue this module or am I going to need to spend $2K on a new one?

Thanks.

Hello David_afx,

Is the cFP directly attached to the testing computer or is it on a different subnet. I would first try and connect the device directly and attempt to attain a connection. After an IP reset the device will default to an IP Address of 0.0.0.0. I suggest attaching a serial cable to the device and attempt to read the console out of the device. If the device maintains a Red Status LED and you are unable to connect to the device at all then the device is possibly faulty.

Hi Wear,

The cFP is connected to a 5-port ethernet switch connected to my computer.  Our company network is also connected to this switch, so we have DHCP.  Will the cFP get an IP assignment from DHCP after I do an IP reset?  Or will it stay at 0.0.0.0?  Do I need to change my computer IP to 0.0.0.2 to be on the same subnet?

I haven't tried the serial comm yet, I need to get a serial cable.  Do I set the console-out switch for this?  Are there any serial commands I can send from the computer, or is it just a status output from the cFP?

If we determine that the cFP is faulty, is there the possibility to send it in to NI for repair?

Sorry for the silly questions, our labview system and equipment were setup by a contractor 4 or 5 years ago, so I'm not familiar with setup, design, and debugging of NI systems, just what I can get out of the users guides and forums.  So don't be afraid to give kindergarten-level answers.

Thanks,

David

Hey David_afx,

Do not worry about asking questions we are here to help. This document has a lot of great information about the controller. Whenever the Reset IP is switched on and you then reboot the controller the IP address will reset to 0.0.0.0. You technically could set the IP address to 0.0.0.2 but the controllers IP address of 0.0.0.0 should be visible on any subnet. I would follow IP standards and at least set the computers IP address to a local network of 10.0.0.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 or a static IP address that is consistent with your network setup. Also after you have rebooted the target make sure you switch the IP Reset switch back to off before you change the IP address again and reboot. The easiest way to test the system would be to directly connect the cFP to the computer. You should be able to view the device in Measurement and Automation Explorer. Change the IP Address to a static IP Address that is in line with your network.

If you cannot see the device in MAX attempt to restart the controller in SAFE Mode. Another step would be to

temporarily disable Windows Firewalls and Anti-virus Software.

In regards to the console out you will need to turn the console out switch to the on position and connect to the serial port using a null modem cable. This interface is for monitoring the status of the cFP.

Finally if you are unable to establish a connection using this computer or another then you can contact National Instruments and talk to a repair consultant to discuss repair options.

I hope this helps.
