NI5122 hardware clocking error

The NI 5122 could not pass self test in Measurement and Automation, and the error statement is "Error-200313 occurred at self test. Measurements: Hardware clocking error occurred." Then I used another 5122 board, it worked well.

So, this sounds like a hardware error, right? Is there any way we can fix it?

Thank you!

Usually this means that your board is physically damaged and will need to be sent in for repair.  There is one thing you can try first though.  Assuming you have a PXI version of the board, there are 2 black connectors that run between the two boards at the back of the board (the end with the PXI connector) .  Sometimes in high vibration environments the screws that hold the 2 boards of the 5122 together can get loose and these connectors can partially separate.  It is worth checking that this is not the case before sending the board for repair.

Hi Matt,

Ours is PCI version. Do you have any suggestions considering this version?

It is basically the same setup except on PCI you have one long board and one short one.  Towards the back of the short board (see picture below) are the 2 long black connectors I was referring to.  There should be 2 metal standoffs along the back edge of the short board by these connectors which are holding the boards together.  Check the screws (4 total) on each side of these standoffs to make sure they are tight and check that the black connectors are firmly engaged between both boards.

This is a bit of a long shot as there are many other things that can cause the problem you are having but this is the only thing that you can really fix by yourself.

Hope this helps.

I just checked the screws and black connectors, and I'm pretty sure that the two boards are firmly attached. Seems that we need to send it back.

Hi Jessy,

To perform an RMA you will need to contact NI Technical Support by phone.  More details can be found in the following knowledgebase article:

Sending a National Instruments Board in for Repair or Calibration

Thanks and have a great day!

Hi John,

I know this thread is quiet old but I already have a couple of PXI 5122 with the same issue. May I know how to prevent this kind of hardware failure?

Thanks,

Drian

Hi Drian,

There really isn't much you can do to prevent the issue in general terms.  This error is a general error that indicates a clock signal is not working correctly on the board, and there are many possibilities of where a problem could occur to cause such an error, so more information on what failed is needed before any type of recommendations on prevention are possible.  If you are seeing this error on multiple boards then you should contact NI support to have the boards sent in to find the cause of the failure.  If there is a common failure between the boards they will be able to help determine if the cause could be related to how the boards are being used or something else.

Matt
