Job req is not posted yet, I will update with a comment as it goes live.
SAIC is looking for an engineer to do some hardware-in-the-loop engineering work. The official req posting will be for associate to staff level (0-5 years experience) but, higher levels are possible in the senior to principal range depending on skill set.
Basic description below. Levels between associate and principal will be a mix between the two descriptions. If you feel like jumping ship, send me an email and I can give more details:
william.l.blackburn13.ctr@army.mil
Associate Level
What you will do
- Help maintain and support existing HIL test systems used for validating military software and hardware.
- Assist in diagnosing system issues and implementing improvements to stability, maintainability, and efficiency.
- Contribute to the development of new software and hardware tools to expand system capabilities.
- Collaborate with engineers to support automated test infrastructure, documentation, and troubleshooting processes.
- Participate in design and code reviews while developing your engineering skills and understanding of best practices.
What we are looking for
We’re not expecting you to have years of experience—we’re looking for someone who’s excited to learn, eager to contribute, and genuinely interested in embedded systems and LabVIEW development.
Preferred Qualifications (not all required):
- Exposure to LabVIEW (via coursework, projects, or internship) or a strong willingness to learn
- Strong troubleshooting mindset and desire to understand system-level behavior.
- Organized, self-motivated, and able to communicate clearly in a team setting.
- Interest in exposure to a wide range of technical domains. Because our systems interact with many components—mechanical, electrical, and software—you’ll often dig into documentation, speak with other teams, and develop a working knowledge of subsystems beyond your immediate scope. Over time, you’ll naturally grow into a domain expert on the areas you touch.
Additional details
- Must hold or be able to obtain a U.S. Secret Clearance (U.S. Citizenship required)
- This is a fully onsite position at Redstone Arsenal. Due to the nature of the work, remote/hybrid is not available.
- You’ll receive onboarding, hands-on mentoring, and support from senior engineers as you grow into the role.
Principal Level
What you will do
- Maintain and improve HIL test systems—addressing both existing issues and new requirements—to support evolving test goals
- Refactor existing LabVIEW codebases to improve usability, maintainability, performance, and scalability.
- Develop new software and hardware components to expand test capabilities for upcoming system features.
- Design reusable frameworks and architectures that can support multiple configurations or be used by less-experienced developers.
- Improve internal tooling and infrastructure to streamline testing workflows and increase engineering productivity.
- Assist other groups with test tool usage and apply domain expertise to broader systems where needed.
- Provide mentorship and technical leadership to junior engineers on best practices, design approaches, and debugging techniques.
- Play a key role in guiding long-term direction, helping prioritize work, and aligning team efforts with program goals.
- Deepen your domain expertise. Our systems interact with a broad array of hardware and software. You’ll frequently investigate subsystems you interface with, gaining cross-disciplinary knowledge and becoming a go-to resource on complex system interactions.
What we are looking for
Must-Have Qualifications:
- Proficiency in LabVIEW, including:
- Object-oriented LabVIEW programming
- Design and development of modular, reusable frameworks
- Strong grasp of LabVIEW best practices and coding standards
- Strong troubleshooting skills with combined hardware/software systems
- Familiarity with laboratory tools (multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, etc.)
- Understanding of electrical concepts: continuity, resistance, voltage, current, grounding, capacitance, etc.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience supporting military or aerospace test infrastructure
- Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing
- Familiarity with hardware communication protocols (e.g., CAN, RS-232, SPI, etc.)
- Experience with source control systems and conducting code reviews
- Experience with DevOps, networking, server configuration
Additional details
- Must hold or be able to obtain a U.S. Secret Clearance (U.S. Citizenship required)
- Work Environment: This is a fully onsite position at Redstone Arsenal. Due to the nature of the work, remote/hybrid is not available.
- Mentorship & Influence: Senior-level authority to shape designs, guide less experienced developers, and drive system evolution.
- 10+ years of experience
I saw my father do some work on a car once as a kid and I asked him "How did you know how to do that?" He responded "I didn't, I had to figure it out."
