Evolving the Woburn LabVIEW User Group

The LabVIEW User Group in Woburn, MA is hosting its next meeting Thursday, December 12, from 11:30AM - 1:00PM and I wanted to make you aware of some changes:

The Feedback

From my discussions with existing UG participants as well as those at other sites, I've gathered that our Woburn UG

  • Could benefit from a more consistent structure
  • Needs to be more "User Driven"
  • Needs to feature topics more relevant (read: advanced) to the attendees
The Changes
I would like to evolve our user group into a truly community-driven event, where:
  • Part of every meeting features a presentation of code that you wrote that you present and submit for feedback to our panel of experts (The CLD's and CLA's in the room), a "Case Study", if you will
  • The presentation facilitates a discussion amongst participants on best practices
  • Based on your collective needs, the content and presenter for the next User Group meeting is decided
  • Users support one another and are driven to build the community (both from a proficiency level and in numbers)
  • We meet meet in the evenings from 6:00PM-8:00PM over pizza and beer (the best part!)

The Result: A Pilot

Jennifer from Keurig in Burlington, MA has bravely volunteered to present an application she is working on as well as the code she has written. She has chosen a standard state machine as her architecture and is interested in improving that architecture for scalability and rugged execution. Our goals for the meeting are to:
  • Understand Jennifer's Application
  • Check to ensure her goals are consistent with best practices (Discussion)
  • Offer suggestions for improvement (Discussion: why is it an improvement?)
  • Discuss "Next Steps" learning resources

With whatever time we have remaining, we will

  • Decide on a featured application for the next user group
  • Brainstorm possible topics of discussion
  • Discuss Best Practices in Source Code Control in LabVIEW (I will be ready to demonstrate Tortoise SVN with a LabVIEW Plug-In and Google Code as a Repository)

I look forward to your feedback and participation and hope to see you on Thursday, December 12, from 11:30AM - 1:00PM
