DeviceNet in LabVIEW - Hardware Interface

If I try to use a USB-DNET gadget from another company than NI, will all NI DNET software work ok, or should I avoid that solution ?  NI doesn't seem to have a large selection of DNET interfaces....

Any experiance or recommendation on this subject ?

Hi Martin,

NI-DNET drivers are made to work with NI-DNET hardware. At this point, NI-DNET is legacy and not recommended.

Our newer line of devices, supported by the NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet driver, include a PXI device (PXI-8332), PCI device (PCI-8332) and C Series module (NI-9882).

NI's DeviceNet drivers were made to support our hardware interfaces - they will not work with 3rd party DeviceNet adapters.

Of course, once you have a DeviceNet interface, you can communicate with other DeviceNet nodes (e.g. 3rd party).

I understand 3rd party interfaces should be avoided. But theres another issue here I'd like you to elaborate. You say that NI-DNET is legacy, and then you use another term "NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet". Do you mean that DeviceNet software/hardware is an outdated solution in general (which would be my point of view also), or are you saying that the National Instruments line called NI-DNET is outdated, while they have something newer and better called "NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet". Please explain. Are you at NI ?

Hey Martin,

Yep, I'm at NI. The NI line called NI-DNET (which includes hardware devices and the NI-DNET driver software that supports that hardware) is not recommended for new designs (product page😞

The newer line of products that will continue to be recommended and sold moving forward is NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet. Like NI-DNET, this includes hardware (9882 and 8532) and the driver software to support those hardware devices.
