I wasn't sure the best forumn to post this in so please dop move it if required
I have an NI USB-RS232 cable. I'd like a driver to allow my PC (windows 7) to be able to recognise and communicate over said cable when the USB is attached.
After downloading and installing what purported to be the driver for this from the NI website I realsie I DO NOT WANT:
Programs
Services
Processes
Other drivers
Most of all I do not want a darn update service asking me if I want to add even more software every time I boot up!!!!
Please could NI provide a link where I can download and install the relevant driver. JUST the driver. Nothing else.
Thank you.

It should have autoinstalled as a com port with windows plug and play drivers as soon as you plugged it in, just like any other USB-232 converter.

Hi Wolf99,
Can you please post the link you used to download the driver for these services.
http://www.ni.com/download/ni-visa-14.0/4722/en/ - Did you install just NI-VISA ?
Here is a link to stop NI Update service from running - http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/AB991989F336467C86257432007112FF
I hope this helps.

The download link was http://download.ni.com/support/softlib/serial/Windows/NI-Serial%203.9/niser390.exe (The offline installer)
Which I found at the page: http://www.ni.com/download/ni-serial-3.9/3621/en/
When running the installer, I attempted to deselect as many install options as possible. However, selecting the serial driver automatically selected other packages, such as VISA, etc, which could not be deselected without also deselecting the driver...
Thanks for the link for disabling the update service, I have folowed the instructions there.
Is it possible to uninstall or disable the other services and so on wihtout losing the driver functionality? As a dev machine, I try to keep the PC as clean as possible, even so there are still quite a number of services and updaters and debug servers and etc that run so keeping these to a minimum is desirable. (for PC startup time, CPU time, RAM usage, interference with other programs [eg other VISA providers], accidental interference from locally compiled programs, etc)
Thanks

Hi wolf99,
When you go through the installtion you can check what's going to be installed because it will have a green tick next to it. When I run through the installation procedure I can cick on VISA and select "Do not install this feature". You will be able to control what's installed through this method.

As I mentioned previously, the installer will not allow me to do this.
It will not allow me to deselect all features of VISA without also deselecting the NI-Serial 3.9 option. These items under VISA do not even allow the "Do not install this feature" option, as shown in the image below.
If I select do not install this feature for NI-Serial 3.9, only then can I select do not install for the entirity of VISA. But once I subsequently select install this feature for NI-Serial, the VISA features are automatically added back in.... Gah!
I note that even though I have uninstalled the NI software, NiSerU remains in my system32 drivers (am on 64-bit though?) although windows plug&play driver search fails and the device shows up as an unknown device in windows device manager.
Is NiSerU.sys the correct file for use as the driver I need?
Thanks

Hi Wolf99,
I've looked at the NI-Serial installer and it seems that if I select the core elements that you will need the install is around 21 MB. The VISA driver is designed to be installed as the package and as individual elements that are hardware specific. 21MB shouldn't make any difference to your PC's performance and it may cause issues at a later date if the full VISA package.
I hope this helps
