Can not delete a device in NI MAX, message says an unknown error occured

I do not know what went wrong when, or what triggered it, but I have a TCPIP entry in my VISA resource of NI-MAX.  I can not delete it.  I can't actually do anything with it.  It asks me to enter an ethernet address, and it keeps asking me if I want to save changes.  But no matter what I do, I end up with an unknown error, and the corrupt resource is still there.

Any ideas on how to fix this are greatly appreciated.  I realize there are many of these types of quesitons, and I've searched for possible solutions.  The best I could find were the instructions to "net stop mxssvr", and then delete the data file in the MAX folder.  This did not solve the problem in my case.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

What is the exact error message that you see?

Also, it looks like you tried to reset the MAX database. This should have removed all the devices and configurations in MAX. Do you have any other NI devices that have been detected in MAX, and did resetting the MAX database reset the aliases?

One thing you can do to test this is to assign an alias to a device that you can see in MAX (could be a GPIB device, etc). Please follow the instructions in the KnowledgeBase article here. Then when you open up MAX again, see if the aliases you assigned remains. One thing to note is that you have to be in Administrator mode to be able to do this.

Let us know how it goes!

Hi Rasheel,

I don't have the exact wording of the error message, but it goes something like this:  "that resource can not be deleted because an unkonwn error has occured."

The knowledge base that you suggested is the one that I had already attempted.  It does not resolve the issue.

I eventually un-installed and then re-installed NI MAX.  This solved the problem.

I'm having the same issue in which i was trying to change network devices IP addresses to a different subnet address.  I went from NI Max 5.3.3 to 5.4 and it did not clear these network items.  How big of a version did you jump to?  There seems to be a file somewhere in which NI MAX is remembering these devices.  What file can i delete or modify to erase these devices?

I have found that the only thing that I could do was Reset Configuration in NI-MAX which means you lose tasks, etc.

I did try that and the removal database tool. There has to be some other file that the network config is stored in. The reason I say this is because all other instruments aliases went back to default.
