GPIB-USB-HS cable length issue?

If we cannot get the PCMCIA/GPIB cards to work with the desktop and the PCMCIA to PCI adapter, we are consideirng other solutions.

One solution would be to purchase the NI GPIB-USB-HS.  One test that we run has a 2 meter cable to the shield room wall.  Then another 25 foot GPIB in the shield room over to a signal generator.

Has anyone tried running these kinds of distances without an extender?  Also, is there any way to figure out what my latency/time delays are in the 25 foot cable with no extenders?

Thanks!

DeannaP,

According to the IEEE 488 standard, GPIB is going to be limited to a maximum cable length of 20m and 4m between adjacent devices.  This is a limitation in the transmission lines.  Here is a KnowledgeBase that further elaborates on this specific topic.  Depending upon the data transfer rates you may need to use an extender to achieve your desired performance needs.
