GPIB-USB HS device not recognised at system start-up

my gpib-usb hs device is not automatically recognised by PC at reboot.

this happens each time PC is rebooted.

problem can normally be fixed by removing and re-inserting usb connection

my PC is an HP Compaq dc7100 cmt, with windows 2000 (SP4) OS

I have NI driver software version 488.2270

please advise if there is a fix to allow device to be recognised after reboot without having to unplug & reconnect it - which gets really annoying after a while!!

thanks Smiley Happy

If it makes you feel better,  I have had trouble with USB-GPIB also.  A technician in my workgroup  has a HP-Compaq used for her functional testing and that USB-GPIB controller was very unreliable.  I installed a PCMCIA-GPIB controller instead and have much less headaches.

Dont much care for USB-GPIB controllers, seem to be much less reliable with keeping a connection to the instruments.  If I add or remove instruments from the bus I sometimes have to reboot and unplug the controller before the controller recognizes the instruments.

I prefer the PCI-GPIB or PCMCIA-GPIB controllers.

Well, I used the same device and never had any problems.

Why don't you try updating the driver to the latest version?

many thanks for taking the time to reply guys,

unfortunately  i am restricted to using only the gpib-usb-hs device, and, as far as i understand, i already have the latest driver installed - NI-488.2 v 2.7 ??

it seems the search continues...............

Hello,

We have not experienced any problems with the GPIB-USB-HS not getting recognized on systems after reboot.  Could you do some troubleshooting steps to make sure that the GPIB-USB-HS (or driver) is the problem?

I would like to make sure this isn't an issue with the brand of USB controller (the controller that runs the USB ports on a computer).

1.  Does the GPIB-USB-HS have this behavior with other brands of computers?  What about ones with a different built in USB controller?

2.  Do other USB devices get recognized on this system automatically after a reboot (USB mouse, keyboard, camera etc)?

Thanks,

Steven T.

Hi Steven,

sorry for delay in reply, i've now checked the items you asked about, and find as follows:

1. I currently run identical GPIB-USB-HS on other computers (Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo E5720) without any problem.

I tried swapping GPIB-USB-HS devices between computers, but this makes no difference. i.e fault stays at HP PC as originally described.

2. USB mouse and keyboard are always recognised after reboot

thanks,

steve kerry

Hello Steve,

I think your test with the GPIB-USB-HS working on other computers shows that there is something different about how this particular USB Host Controller does things during a reboot.

I just found out that keyboard and mouse USB devices come online much sooner than most other devices because they need to be accessible for in the bios.  Also, this different behavior may be expected by other devices so they will operate correctly.

Unfortunately we do not have a computer similar to yours so we may not have a way to reproduce the problem and analyze it further.  I will file a CAR (bug report) on this problem.

Thanks,

Steven T.
