GPIB-USB-HS driver installs everytime I connect it

Hi,

I understand the concept of this USB device. It powers up as a hidden device then the ni drivers download software onto it and it becomes a GPIB-USB-HS device. But that't not important right now...

However, I not would expect to see the "Found new hardware wizard" the first time I connect it after powering up.
Normally connecting devices like cameras and USB pen drives just give a popup from the system tray if they've been seen before.

Also I know the drivers have to be installed for each USB port you connect it to.

The wizard then goes thru its normal "search for drivers" and "copying files" process.
After the "Your new hardware is installed and ready to use" appears the device works correctly.

On occasion the hardware is discovered but the drivers never get installed. Device manager status is "present but not configured". I'll leave this for another time.

Here's some info...

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

Controller & analyser Software V2.3
Measurement & Automation Explorer V3.1.0.3021

Driver Provider: National Instruments
Driver Date: 30/10/04
Driver Version: 2.3.0.3500

Driver Files: c:\windows\system32\drivers\nipalusb.sys

My main question is: Why do I need to go thru the found new hardware wizard each time I connect the device after a fresh boot? Is this normal?

Can anyone shed any light on this.

Cheers

Hi Henry,

The problem you are seeing is expected behaviour for that device on Windows XP it would seem. As if you had a machine with Windows 2000 you shouldn't see this behaviour in that machine. However to answer your question on a Windows XP machine some people have this behaviour stop on an XP machine if they sign in as administrators to their machine.

Please can you try this and get back to me.

I think you will have to log in as local admin, as I have admin rights on my machine through the domain we are on, but still see the issue with a GPIB-USB-B device.

I log on the a windows domain. However the user account is a member of the local administrators group and has administrator rights on this and all other PCs here.

I shall try logging in as local administrator, connecting the device then when the wizard completes, logging back in as the network user...

Hello All,

where can I download the driver for GPIB-USB-HS? NI's search brings me to ni488225.exe , which is 259 MB. That's a joke, not a driver.

The file is actually a self-extracting zip file so it's actually much larger. but, it includes documentation, code examples, and Measurement and Automation Explorer (I think). MAX is a utility program to test, configure, and communicate with instruments. You might also want to think about installing NI-VISA. Both of these are on the CD that comes with the controller.

Hi,    I have similar problem as etcal. I see the "Found new hardware wizard" too often. ..  Ussualy it happens after unpluging device or after some labview vi-program crash, but not always. Windows does not require cd for install and installations are successfull. After that the device works fine for a while. I install GPIB-USB-HS from cd, but it does not solve the problem permanently . Since I am always log as admin solution above is not valid.                Computer: Windows XP Professional verze 2002 Service Pack 2                           Measurement & Automation Explorer V3.1.1.3004                           Driver Provider: National Instruments                           Driver Date: 06/30/2005                           Driver Version: 2.4.0.3500        I would appreciate any help.
