The most common problem that will cause this behavior is if you have a duplicate driver installed. First, check in your Add/Remove Programs folder of your Control Panel to see what National Instruments software is installed:
1. Make sure that the latest driver for your operating system is installed. Check the drivers table for this information:
http://www.ni.com/support/gpib/versions.htm
2. If you have NI LabVIEW 6.0 installed, check to see if NI-488.2 was installed as a component of it. Click on Change or Add/Remove to bring up the software tree. Under the Drivers branch, NI-488.2 1.6 should be "X"ed out and not be available.
Also make sure that you install the hardware after installing the software.
