Installation of TekVISA caused errors in MAX

I have a tektronix rsa 6114A that I can control using a GPIB port, but I'd like to experiment with using the ethernet port instead to hopefully increase data rates. In order to get that working I installed tektronic's visa software on the RSA and on the host pc. Once I was done with it I found that installing it on the host pc causes an unspecified error when I open MAX and it prevents me from properly setting up a TCPIP connection. The error is related to the niVISAe plug-in.

I've uninstalled the offending software, tried repairing MAX, resetting the configuration data, and reinstalling the ni VISA controller and have had no success.

I'll try to dig out the error log and post that as well

Thanks for reminding me,

The error is

"The niVISAe plug-in caused an exception in the CmxsCfgResourceExpert::SynchronizeToConfiguration function in the nimxs process."

I've also attached the error log

thanks

Do you have the number of the error?

It's a warning message, not an error, I don't believe there's an error number associated with it.

I have made some progress in the mean time:

I've found that I can establish connection with the RSA by manually typing in 192.168.1.2::4000::SOCKET when I have the computer and RSA connected with a crossover cable and manual IP addresses set (192.168.1.1 for pc and 192.168.1.2 for device). With the latest software update of TekVISA on the device it's pretty easy to start a socket server on the device specifying port 4000. For a while I was able to open a connection using VISA Open but couldn't do anything else.  This problem was fixed by disabling windows firewall on the RSA. Doing this also enabled me to establish a VXI-11 connection. This I can use with TCPIP0::192.168.1.2::instr0::INSTR specified as the VISA resource name.

This still hasn't fixed the problem in MAX, but it has enabled me to get everything working (and it works fine using a different computer). If you can provide any assistance on the MAX problem I'd appreciate it, but I think I've found a useable workaround.

So now you just don't see you device in MAX or you are still getting the error?

The error (screenshot attached) still occurs when I open MAX. The instrument does not show up in MAX. As I stated above, the problem is still occurring, the only change is that I've found a workaround.

Hello, I am trying to accomplish the same task with the RSA6114A. I'm interested in your work around.  I havent quite got it to work.  I'm getting errors fromt the server application on the RSA when I tried to connect on the local pc.  What exactly did you configure on the RSA and what did you configure on the local pc?  You help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hello,

Are you using TekVISA or NI-VISA? What errors are you seeing exactly? Here are two articles that might be helpful with your issue:

- How to configure an instrument to communicate via TCP/IP in Measurement & Automation Explorer: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/D7D8E3E1B682022286256D4A00771A52

- How to control Ethernet Instruments with NI-VISA: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/80C28CC795611E4A86256AB100209521

You might also want to create a new forum post since this one is over a year old to get more input.

Thanks!
