NI 488.2 Installer Hangs

Hello,

I've been having issues installing NI 488.2 version 3.02 on a laptop recently and figured I would reach out and see if anybody else has encountered this issue before and/or knows a work-around:

The NI installer only never reaches past 3% installed before it hangs. At this point it waits for a period of time and then starts trying to roll back changes. The rollback never completes and the installation neither succeeds not fails. At this point I can click cancel which does abort the installation within a reasonable amount if time.

Subsequent attempts to install the 488.2 never see any progress and the progress bar itself will periodically flicker showing a small progress before immediately being reset back to an empty progress bar. In this state the installer neither terminates (either via completion nor failure) and doesn't abort within a reasonable period of time. After killing the installation process, un-installing the unused shared components from the add remove programs and restarting the PC, installation will proceed as it did in the original (abortable) state.

The (un)installer occasionally complained about the VS2005 merge modules so I opted not to install any of the application support entries of the installer. I also opted not to install the NI VISA as our current product (.NET 4) does not use it and the Agilent VISA stack (version 16.0.14518.0) was being used on this laptop. None of these options seemed to help.

Hello chris_jgr, it is recommended (when facing this issues) to disable the firewall and antivirus, as well as not having any other National Instruments software running at the time of installation. The driver you are installing is the latest version which we have had no reports of failure so far therefore I need to ask, have you tried a different version of the driver?

By the way, what is your operating system? what other NI software is installed?

Hi Eric,

I tried disabling the windows firewall and installing version 3.00 to no avail. The installer still seems to have a hard time "Registering product information..." before it starts to roll back changes and then hang.

No other NI software was running and there is no active anti-virus on the PC. Operating system is Windows 7 x86. Nothing else NI appears in "Programs and Features" but I know that our installer installed "mstudiocommon.2010.msm", "mstudiogpib.2010.msm" and "mstudioutils.msm" in addition to "microsoft_vc100_crt_x86.msm" on this laptop.

Hi chris_jgr, we need you creating a log of your installation. You can achieve the log file creation by typing the following command line structure in a command prompt (cmd)

D:\setup.exe /log C:\setupLog.txt /reinstall

<Drive letter>:\<Setup file path> /log <path and name to save the log file> /reinstall

Please do that and attach the log file to the thread please.

Hi Eric,

I've attachede the log to the installer. It should be noted that we let the install run for an extended period of time during which an error message was displayed with regards to installing the microsoft Visual C++ 2005 MSM x86 and then again later for the 2008 version.
