Hello,
I tried installing NI-VISA on Ubuntu 8.04 without success, script gets stupid even if rpm is available.
So I move to openSuse 11.1 and with the kernel 2.6.27.21-0.1-pae. When time has come for compilation of the nikal, the problem of missing max_mapnr problem appeared. I found that I can use max_pfn instead, so i add #include <linux/bootmem.h>. And code compiles. But the final module cannot be installed, modprobe informs: Invalid module format.
Has anyone idea what I can do with that? I have found solution what I have to have installed and prebuild, but module itself fails to load.
Additionally, has anyone know why NI do not want to add ubuntu to supported distributions? It is really very popular distribution.

Hi
Sorry for a late answer. NI-VISA is officially supported only on openSUSE 11.0 -version 11.1 might have some changes causing the problems. I guess you are installing the latest version of NI-VISA (4.5)? Correct me if I'm wrong. I will look for some more info on this topic and come back to you.

Thank you for your reply.
I think the problem do not lay in distribution itself, but with the compability with newest kernels. A change I made in the code solves the compilation problem, but I am not able to solve the rest. Mainly because I do not have time to do it.
I would be very grateful if version for Ubuntu distributions would be available.

Hi
I just got input from Linux specialists, so forwarding it to you.
OpenSUSE 11.1 is officially not supported and your problems most probably are due to that fact. In order to make it work, I advice downgrading to 11.0, which should work without any problems. As far as I know 11.1 is going to be supported, but I don't have any information when. So you can choose - waiting for new NI-KAL release or downgrading. Let me know which one you choose.
The above is on the official side. Unofficially we know that some clients did manage to install both LabVIEW and NI-VISA on Ubuntu. You can find some information in Linux Users Group.
Let me know how it goes.
Best regards
