PXIe-8234 Install

My application is to use the PXIe-8234 as an Ethernet interface to control instrumentation. At this time, I don’t plan on using the imaging/camera capability.  I have a development computer and a test station (deployment) computer both running Windows 7 SP1, TestStand 2017, and LabVIEW 2018.

If I don’t plan on using the imaging, what software do I need to run this card? Is VISA enough?

Also, I can’t ping a LAN enabled device stopping the installation process.

Further details are attached.

Hi cct3,

You should be able to use the PXIe-8234 as a generic Ethernet interface without needing the Vision drivers. That being said, having the drivers installed shouldn't create any conflict with VISA anyways. Can you check the IP settings of the 8234 ports? Are they set to obtain IP address automatically? Have you double-checked that the Fluke IP address is what you think it is?

Hi Jordan

I verified that the IP settings on the 8234 ports are set to obtain an IP address automatically.  Also, I double checked the IP address on the Fluke DMM and also tried another piece of LAN enabled equipment.

I still have a ping time out and am assuming this stops the installation process.

At least now I know not to be concerned about the need for the Vision software.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Chuck,

Does the Fluke device respond if you plug it in to your PC's primary ethernet port (one not on the 8234)? Can you connect to anything else through the 8234, like the internet?

In Device manager, right click on one of the 8234 ports and select Update Driver, then select "Browse my computer..." and "Let me pick from a list..." What do you see in that list?

Jordan

This is what I see from the "Let me pick from a list...", see attached at the bottom.

Thanks

Does it work if you choose the "Network Connection" option instead of Server Connection? You could also make sure you have the most up-to-date Intel driver for those network interface ports.

I finally got it to work.

  • Used a cross over (Ethernet) cable
  • Swapped out the LAN instrument, the DMM just didn’t seem to connect
  • In the instrument an IP address of 169.254.x.x and mask address of 255.255.0.0 were entered
  • I could ping the instrument
  • In MAX, clicked the “Manual Entry of LAN Instrument” radio button, the Auto-detect did not work here
  • After that it was a typical effort in MAX and in my code development

Thanks

Chuck
