USB-B in new designs

I have a GPIB-USB-B (part# 188417D-01), serial # D2C961

This was purchased probably back in 2003..

I first used it when I developed a Visual Basic 6 (VB6) application 4/5 years ago. It was my first experimentation with USB and VB6. I got my program to work but I noticed the USB would fail after awhile. I thought there might be a problem with the program but when I substituted the USB for a PCI card,  operation was flawless.  Afterwards, as one would expect, I gave thumbs down for GPIB-USB.

My commarade at work suggested I talk with NI and see if there is NOW a better implementation of the USB-B, a firmware upgrade to the hardware, or ?? that would make the USB more reliable (since enough time has gone by to warrant new technology).

The re-interest in USB came as we are thinking of a new PC-104 embedded project that needs GPIB. We will likely use a Linux O.S. (not 100%)  .  As of a year or so ago, for some odd reason, you had no linux or windows type drivers for your PC-104..only dos if I can remember. Since we don't want to create our own drivers, this leaves us only GPIB-USB as a possible choice (unless there is something else).

Please advise us for optimal, reliable embedded development for GPIB.

kzamora,

The NI PC/104-GPIB has support for Windows 2000/NT/XP/Me/9x/3.1 and DOS and then support for any OS for users willing to develop their own driver.

I can't speak to your past experiences with GPIB-USB.  I can say that many customers currently use it wihout issue, however, introducing USB into the equation does add a layer of complexity to the communication.  We now offer the GPIB-USB-HS (newer than the GPIB-USB-B) with drivers for Windows, OSX and Linux.

Ben
