Unable to install VISA runtime with serial support on Vista

Hi everyone!

I am trying to install VISA runtime 4.1 on a Vista computer. I get an "installation unable to proceed" message with the following explanation:

"Unsupported version of National Instruments system component detected. A version of a National Instruments system component that is not supported on this operating system has been detected. You must cancel this installation and uninstall all unsupported National Instruments software before continuing. Refer to ni.com/vista for more information."

Any insights?

Actually, I am using NI-VISA Runtime version 4.1.

I just managed to get it installed by first removing all other NI software (I originally had NI-DAQmx 8.3 RTE4 installed, which nominally has no Vista support as I just checked).

I was then able to add the DAQmx RTE back, however, my DAQ board is no longer recognized by my application or by NI-MAX. It is still recognized by Windows.

So, to summarize, I can have VISA and serial ports, or I can have DAQmx RTE and DAQ hardware, by I can not have both at the same time.

I will try full DAQmx 8.5 now, instead of the RTE. Will post the result. Thanks!

Hi Zador,

Once you've gotten bit by the "unsupported software" bug, there's really only one way to make sure you're rid of it--uninstall all of your NI software from Control Panel, run a Vista cleanup utility, then start reinstalling.  The process is detailed in a KnowledgeBase article here.  Good luck!
