VISA won't open PCI-GPIB+ card

Sorry if this question appears twice.  I installed an NI PCI-GPIB card on my WinXP machine and the NI488.2-Communicator works

OK with the connected instruments.  However, VISA will not open any of the instruments.  I always get a resource not found return.

The addresses are formatted correctly, e.g. GPIB0::7::INSTR.  VISA works with lan connections.  I installed VISA 4.5 without

changing the behavior(previous VISA was 4.0).

This might be a shot in the dark, but see if you have a folder called c:\vxipnp. This is where the visaconf.ini file used to be stored. It's now in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\National Instruments\NIvisa. If you have the vxipnp folder, search for a visaconf.ini file in one of the sub-folders. I don't remember exactly which one it used to be in. If you find one, delete it. Start MAX and redo a scan for instruments. See if the error goes away. If it's still there, close MAX and delete the visaconf.ini in the Documents and Settings folder. Restart MAX and do the scan again. Any aliases you might have saved will be gone.

Thanks for the pointer to the ini file.  I looked in the file and saw that Use Agilent VISA was true(I have Agilent VISA installed as secondary

VISA).  I disabled the Tulip passport and was able to get NI VISA to connect.  Unfortunately, this precipitated a system crash and I

had great difficulty getting the system back; the GPIB driver is currently uninstalled.  Thanks again though.

Why would you install Agilent VISA?

Because I work for Agilent and I have to check both VISAs.  Agilent VISA works fine as secondary VISA.  I had the TULIP passport

turned on so I could use an Agilent USB->GPIB converter and Labview,no problem.  But when I installed the GPIB card I created a

form of deadly embrace.  Agilent VISA directed everything to NI VISA which directed it back to Agilent VISA via the Tulip passport.
