Todd,
I have to date been unable to duplicate your exact problem.
However, I think I may have found a very simple complex solution. This took nearly six years. Sorry for the delay.
I believe that I could sum it up very succinctly, but this would require quite a verbose and detailed lengthy discussion that only I might comprehend, short of providing the code.
Do you understand?
I have attempted not use improper font sizes, but I am still using a Mac to make this post/reply to your delemina.
If you have solved you problem, then please forgive the lack of ....
Got to go, I hear Bader foot steps.

I gave you some Kudos.

version 2.4 has indeed been released.
http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/340/lang/en
And the link clearly states:
NI-488.2 for Windows Version 2.4 is the latest driver offering from National Instruments. Every attempt has been made to maintain backward compatibility with the installed base of existing NI-488.2 applications.
However, I don't think it is intended for use with Vista.
It seams that every released version still claims to be the "latest driver".
Sorry for the large font size.
You won't believe how much trouble I got in the last time I mistakenly used a large font size.
Are all your punkies off to college yet?

Kevin-
Thanks for pointing out the confusing wording in the driver release notes. We are in the process of removing the "latest driver offering" phrase from the download pages for our existng NI-488.2 drivers (although it will still be in the actual Readme files), and we will be removing the phrase entirely for new releases.
Thanks,
Jason S.
