disassemble a string

i am trying to seperate components of a data string so i can insert string components such as tabs in order to write them to a table.

If you send an example-string people can answer your formatting-question.
If you need to get the idea, study the string functions chapter of the manual and examples on string-formatting.
My favorite vi's are "split string", "format into string" and "match pattern".
