how to connect to instruments through RS232 and GPIB

Hi,

I want to connect SR830 Lock-in amplifier and Agilent function generator using GPIB and RS232 cable respectively. When I connected the instruments and I look in the NI-MAX, it seems labview is not recognizing the interfaces (attched screenshot). Also I have connceted with the DAQ borad and I could not getting any option for VISA dropdown menu for it. I have also connected another function generator using USB and LV is recognising it and it is  working well. But not the other ones. I have installed NI-488.2 (version 3.1.1). Is anything else required? My Labveiw version is 2012 SP1.

Thanks,

You've got a com port recognized. Is that where you have the function generator? The instrument itself will not be recognized.

Why type of GPIB controller are you using? One from NI?

No, the com port is connected to the lock-in amplifier. Yes, I  am using GPIB controller from NI.

OK the DAQ board will not show up in VISA.  If its a DAQmx device it will show up in DAQmx.   VISA is VISA and DAQmx is DAQmx, two different APIs.

Greetings Premashis

What happens if you connect only the interfaces to the computer? What is your operating system? What version of NI-VISA do you have installed in your computer? Have you tried Resetting MAX Configuration Data? Do the interfaces show up in the Device Manager? Can you do a serial loopback test?

Hi Luis,

Its the same whether I connect the port only to computer or to the instrument. I am using a Windows 7 and my NI-VISA version is 5.4.

I have tried  resetting MAX configuration data but without any help. The interfaces does not show up in the device manager.

Thanks,

I fixed the problem, it seems it was a conncetion problem. I reinstalled the cards and GPIB/ NI-PCI appear in the MAX. But still I do not see the RS-232 port in the MAX. Do I need to install any additional driver for that?

thanks,

Your very first post has an image of MAX with the com port listed. Are you now saying you are using an additional com port?
