what is Error 0 in the gpib 2.0 install

I am trying to get a pci gpib card working on win xp.
I downloaded the gpib 2.0 files from ni website and
tried to install but got:
Error 0:Failed to perform action Add GPIB Hardware Wizard.
Without the wizard I am screwed since that's what installs the NI drivers.

The Add GPIB Hardware Wizard does not install the drivers. You should be unzipping the software to your hard drive, installing the software, shutting down, and plugging in your card.
If you have any questions check out the Hardware Installation Wizard.

Note: If you have LabVIEW installed, keep in mind that part of LabVIEW's complete install is to install NI-488.2, so you may have accidentally installed more than one driver.

You seem to have misunderstood the nature of the problem.
After following the steps you mention, to wit
unzipping, installing software, restarting, plugging in card, then starting up, the card is NOT RECOGNIZED
AS AN NI CARD because the software install gives an
error the depth of which is sufficient to obviate all further progress. The NI .dlls which in fact ARE installed by the 2.0 software (contrary to your irksome statement), do not make it onto my system due to this error. Without these .dlls the card is only seen as an 'unknown pci device'.

I should perhaps mention that despite the bungling 'help' given by both local and overseas
'support', I managed to get the device working by erasing my hard drive, reinstalling windows, and resintall
ing the 2.0 drivers. Error 0 remains an untrammeled mystery.

I haven't heard from you, unless your e-mail slipped by me. I am posting some general information regarding Error 0 and what to do when it's encountered.

Error 0 is usually a non-fatal Error. To be sure the software is installed correctly you should reboot your system after installing the software, and use the Troubleshooting wizard to verify that the software is installed correctly. If you fail to get the troubleshooting wizard to pass after following all suggestions in the help file, then try the following to reinstall the software.

1. Verify that the Operating System, and Hardware is supported by this version of the driver.
2. Close all GPIB Programs and Applications.
3. Uninstall the software using the Add/Remove Pro
gram Applet.
4. Reboot.
5. Download the NI-488.2 for Windows version 2.0 software, and run the setup program again.
6. Reboot.
7. Run the Troubleshooting Wizard to verify the installation.
